YANKTON – The ‘Chutes swept Yankton Post 12 in a Junior Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Riverside, rallying in the opener for a 13-11 victory and then prevailing in the nightcap by a 5-2 margin in six innings.

YANKTON – The ‘Chutes swept Yankton Post 12 in a Junior Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Riverside, rallying in the opener for a 13-11 victory and then prevailing in the nightcap by a 5-2 margin in six innings.
Brookings (10-12) plays host to Harrisburg in a twinbill Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.
Game 1
• Brookings 13, Yankton 11
The ‘Chutes scored five consecutive runs late for the come-from-behind victory.
Jamison Honkomp went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored. He led off the sixth inning with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Cole Mahlum’s two-out single to cut the deficit to 11-9. Mahlum was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
Brookings put together a big two-out rally in the seventh, scoring four runs to grab the lead.
Max Kjelden and Jackson Krogman got it going with back-to-back singles – the latter stole second base.
Honkomp followed with a two-run hit to pull the ‘Chutes even at 11-11.
Caden Wright, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, doubled to keep things going.
Cayden Jacobsma stepped up with a two-run single to put Post 74 ahead 13-11.
Krogman, the third of four Brookings pitchers, threw four innings to earn the win. He allowed one run – unearned – on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
Messerli tossed a scoreless seventh, striking out two and walking one, to notch the save. He was 2-for-4 with two runs at the plate.
Kjelden ended up 2-for-5 with two runs. Krogman and Henry Hammerich, who also singled, both scored twice.
Post 12’s Wil Pease went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Matt Hein was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The game was tied 2-2 after an inning, before Yankton moved ahead 10-7 after two. The hosts led 11-8 through three.
Caleb Mastalir took the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits over the final two frames.

Game 2

Caden Wright took a shutout into the fifth inning and the Bombers Black totaled 10 hits to complete the sweep.
Wright gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in 4 1/3 innings. Dan Messerli threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out a batter, to pick up his second save of the day.
Messerli singled to lead off the game and stole second. Max Kjelden quickly brought him home with a hit to open the scoring.
With one out in the third frame, Jackson Krogman walked and Jamison Honkomp singled. Following a double steal, Krogman sprinted home on a wild pitch. Kyle Bauer’s two-out RBI single pushed the margin to 3-0.
Messerli singled to open the fourth, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Honkomp’s two-out single.
Yankton cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth on Brody Burgeson’s two-run double, which chased Wright.
Messerli entered and retired five of the six batters he faced.
Brookings put together a two-out rally in the sixth to add a run.
Cayden Jacobsma walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball and, after Honkomp walked, scored on a wild pitch to provide for the final margin.
Honkomp finished 2-for-3 with the RBI. Messerli (two runs) and Bauer (RBI) both went 2-for-4.
Post 12’s Trevor Fitzgerald took the loss, surrendering four runs on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings.
