Four singles competitors, two doubles teams advance in consolation bracket on Thursday

RAPID CITY — The Brookings Bobcats are in 11th place after the first day of the SDHSAA State Boys Tennis Tournament on Thursday.

The opening day was headlined by singles competition as four Bobcats advanced to the consolation semifinals in their respective brackets.

Carson Kreie advanced after splitting his first two matches in the third singles flight. Kreie lost to Harrisburg’s Cooper Rott 6-1, 6-0 in the first round but rebounded to defeat Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Brayden Parke 10-2 in the consolation semifinals. Kreie will face Brandon Valley’s Lucas Fogarty on Friday.

Xavier St. Pierre lost his first match to Harrisburg’s Brayden Rausch 6-1,v6-3 in the first round of the fourth singles flight but defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Andrew Brockmueller 10-2 in the consolation quarterfinals. Xavier St. Pierre will face Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Carter Kemmis on Friday.

Zachary Mueller lost to Watertown’s Skyler Stanton 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in the first round and received a bye into the consolation semifinals. Mueller will face Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Kyan Kemmis on Friday.

Andrew Hahn of Brookings also advanced to the consolation semifinals after losing his first match to Mitchell’s Asher Dannenbring 6-1, 6-1 but defeating Aberdeen Central’s Gannon Pederson 10-6. Hahn will face Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Asher Vandewater on Friday.

Braylon Peters competed in the first flight and lost to O’Gorman’s Will Koziara 6-0, 6-0. Peters fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Aberdeen Central’s Anderson Prehn by a score of 10-6.

J.C. St. Pierre competed in the second flight and lost to third-seeded Cooper Johnson of O’Gorman 6-0, 6-0. St. Pierre also lost to Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Blaek Walter 10-2 in the consolation quarterfinals.

In doubles action, the team of Peters and Kreie lost to Yankton’s Zachary Briggs and Harrison Krajewski 6-2, 6-0 in the first round but defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Boen McKee and Kaleb Updegraff 10-9 in the consolation quarterfinals. Peters and Kreie will face Dayler Segrist and Max Phares of Rapid City Central on Friday.

The team of Mueller and Hahn also advanced to the consolation semifinals in the third doubles flight. Mueller and Hahn lost to Mitchell’s Cooper Star and Sutton Thompson 6-2, 6-4 before defeating Rapid City Central’s Kieran Fuhrmann and Greysun Weston 10-3 in the consolation quarterfinals. Mueller and Hahn will face Sioux Falls Washington’s Austin Sorgdrager and Eli Boyd on Friday.

J.C. St. Pierre and Xavier St. Pierre competed in the second doubles flight falling to third-seeded Jacob Morgans and Owen Boyd 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Charlie Erickson and Carter Kemmis 10-3 in the consolation quarterfinals.

O’Gorman and Lincoln are tied for first place after the first day of the tournament with both schools having 268 points. Washington is third with 236 points while Harrisburg is fourth with 214 points and Yankton is fifth with 180 points.

The tournament will continue in Rapid City on Friday morning.
