Civil Air Patrol cadets take to skies over Brookings

BROOKINGS — Five Big Sioux Composite Squadron cadets recently participated in a Cadet Orientation Flight Program at Brookings Regional Airport.

The flights are a part of the Civil Air Patrol program, which introduces cadets to general aviation through hands-on orientation flights, or “O-rides” in single-engine aircraft and gliders.

Cadets who completed their orientation flights include C/Airman Kaeden Kalber, C/Senior Airman Johnny Weelborg, and C/Technical Sergeant Tyson Springman of Brookings and C/Senior Airman Michael Kruse and C/Staff Sergeant Tysen King of Volga.

The cadets flew in CAP’s Cessna 182 and 172 aircraft, piloted by 1st Lt. Kevin Hobbie of Brookings, as well as several pilots from the Sioux Falls area.

The flights allowed the cadets to apply the aviation fundamentals they learn in the CAP program and to experience direct, hands-on control of an aircraft in flight.

“Although some cadets were initially reserved, fun was certainly had by all once the thrill of command of the aircraft was handed their way,” said pilot Capt. Kurt Johnson. “All were respectful and appreciative, and I look forward to future events with them!”

The Civil Air Patrol cadet program provides youth ages 12 to 17 the opportunity to explore aerospace, aviation, emergency services, and learn leadership skills.

Civil Air Patrol is a public service organization and an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.

Adults interested in mentoring youth, serving the community, or volunteering to fly can also join as members. If you are an educator, you can join as an aerospace educator and have access to aerospace/STEM educational opportunities and materials.
