Five Brookings-area athletes earn All-State honors

The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association released its All-State teams for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday with five area athletes honored.

Five Brookings-area athletes earn All-State honors

The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association released its All-State teams for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday with five area athletes honored.

Flandreau’s Claire Sheppard was selected to the Class A First Team and Flandreau’s Lily Klein was selected to the Class A Second Team.

Arlington’s Addalyn Steffensen was selected to the Class B First Team and Jaelyn Huntimer was selected to the All-State Third Team for Arlington as well.

Iroquois/Lake Preston’s Adison Moore was also named an honorable mention in Class B.

CLASS A

First Team

Claire Sheppard – Flandreau, Senior – Forward
Sheppard made the All-State team for the third straight year as she was a second-team selection in 2021 and a first-team selection in 2022. A South Dakota State commit, Sheppard averaged 14 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while leading the Fliers to a 25-1 record and the consolation championship at the Class A State Tournament.

Katie Vasecka – Tea Area, Senior – Guard
Vasecka was named the Class A Player of the Year after averaging 22.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season. A South Dakota State commit, two-time first team selection and a second-team selection in 2021, Vasecka led Tea Area to a 21-5 record and the Class A championship game.

Ashlyn Koupal – Wagner, Sophomore – Guard/Forward
Koupal earned first team honors for the second straight year after leading the Red Raiders to an 18-4 record this season. Koupal averaged 21.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and had 96 blocks as Wagner reached the Region 5A semifinal.

Emilee Fox – Mount Vernon/Plankinton, Senior – Guard
A South Dakota State commit, Fox averaged 21.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game for the Titans this season. Fox also made 112 3-pointers this year and has 2,260 career points. A two-time first-team selection in 2021 and 2022 and a second team selection in 2020, Fox led the Titans to a 19-7 record and a berth in the Class A State Tournament.

Krista Langager – Sisseton, Junior – Center
Lanager earned her first All-State selection after averaging 20.5 points and nine rebounds per game for the Redmen this season. Sisseton went 23-2 and finished in third place at the Class A State Tournament.

Addison Neuendorf – Hamlin, Sophomore – Guard
Neuendorf earned All-State honors for the first time after averaging 20.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game for the Chargers this season. Hamlin went 14-8 and reached the Region 2A semifinals.

Second Team

Lily Klein – Flandreau, Senior – Guard
Klein averaged 14.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to earn her first All-State selection this season.

Ashlan Carlow-Blount – Mahpíya Lúta, Sophomore – Guard
Carlow-Blount earned All-State honors for the first time after averaging 17.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game this season. Carlow-Blount also had 102 steals as she led Mahpíya Lúta to a 23-2 record and sixth place at the Class A State Tournament.

Caylin Kelly – Florence-Henry, Senior – Forward/Guard
Kelly averaged 15 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for the Falcons this season. Florence-Henry went 17-6 and lost to Hanson 49-45 in the Class A SoDak 16.

Macy Koupal – Wagner, Senior – Guard/Forward
Koupal averaged 17.1 points, 6.8 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists per game for the Red Raiders this season. This is her first All-State selection.

Mataya Ward – Belle Fourche, Senior – Guard/Forward
Ward averaged 20 points per game and five rebounds per game to earn her first All-State selection. The Mustangs went 16-5 and lost 81-49 to Mahpíya Lúta in the SoDak 16 on Feb. 29.

Mara Grant – Tea Area, Senior – Forward
Grant averaged 15.1 points and 9.9 rebounds for the Titans this season to earn her first All-State selection.

Third Team

Taylor Reuvers, Vermillion, 8th Grader – Guard
Reuvers earned her first All-State selection, averaging 11 points, four rebounds and five assists per game for the Tanagers this season. Vermillion went 22-4 and won the Class A State Championship.

Brooke Jensen, Vermillion, Junior – Guard
Jensen averaged 12 points per game and six rebounds per game to earn her first All-State selection.

Reagan Rus – Mount Vernon-Plankinton, Junior – Guard
Rus averaged 16.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Titans this season. This is Rus’s first All-State selection.

Carli Kuper – Lennox, Senior – Forward
Kuper averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to earn her first All-State selection. The Orioles went 16-6 and reached the Region 4A semifinals.

Alyssa Moschell – Hanson, Senior – Guard/Forward
Moschell averaged 14.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game to earn her first All-State selection. Hanson finished with a record of 17-8 and reached the Class A State Tournament.

Maggie Taylor – Hill City, Senior – Center
Taylor averaged 16.9 points and 12.6 rebounds per game for her first All-State selection. The Bears went 18-5 and lost to Flandreau 58-32 in the SoDak 16 on Feb. 29.

CLASS B

First Team

Addalyn Steffensen – Arlington, Junior – Guard
Steffensen earned her first All-State selection by averaging 16.2 points and six rebounds per game for the Cardinals this season. Arlington finished 23-3 on the season and advanced to the Class B state championship game for the first time in school history.

Ava Lingemann – Ethan, Senior – Guard
Lingemann was the Class B Player of the Year and earned her second straight first-team selection after averaging 20.2 points and 7.7 assists per game for the Rustlers. Ethan went 22-3 and finished in third place at the Class B State Tournament.

Skyler Volmer – Lyman, Senior – Guard
After making the third team last season, Volmer earned her second All-State selection by averaging 16.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game with 78 steals for the Raiders this season. The Raiders went 21-4 and finished fourth at the Class B State Tournament.

Paige Kjerstad – Wall, Senior – Guard
Kjerstad earned her first All-State selection, averaging 15.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the Eagles this season. Wall finished with a 21-5 record and won the Class B State Tournament consolation championship.

Aletha Gust – Centerville, Junior – Guard/Forward
Gust earned her first All-State selection averaging 13.4 points and 3.5 assists per game for the Tornadoes. Centerville went 24-2 on the year and defeated Arlington 62-44 to win the Class B State Championship on Mar. 9.

Abby Aslesen – Howard, Senior – Guard/Forward
Aslesen earned her second All-State selection after making the second team last season by averaging 21.1 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. The Tigers went 12-10 on the season and reached the Region 3B semifinals.

Second Team

Makalee Scott – Lyman, Sophomore – Forward
Scott earned her first All-State selection by averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists with 72 steals this season.

Avery Orth – Wessington Springs, Senior – Center
Orth averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for the Spartans to earn her first All-State selection. Wessington Springs finished with a record of 17-5 and made it to the Region 5B semifinals.

Stevie Wittler – Sully Buttes, Senior – Guard
Wittler earned All-State honors for the second straight year after averaging 19.5 points and four rebounds per game this season. Wittler also was a third-team selection last year. The Chargers went 11-10 and reached the Region 6B quarterfinals.

Kaylie Robinson – James Valley Christian, Junior – Guard
Robinson earned her first All-State selection averaging 16.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game with 71 steals this season. The Vikings went 17-8 and finished seventh at the Class B State Tournament.

Emma Marshall – Centerville, Junior – Forward
Marshall earned her first All-State selection, averaging 12.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Tornadoes.

Nora Dinger – Wall, Senior – Guard
Dinger earned her first All-State selection, averaging 12.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game for the Eagles this season.

Third Team

Jaelyn Huntimer – Arlington, Sophomore – Guard
Huntimer made the All-State team for the first time, averaging 14.3 points per game for the Cardinals this season.

Megan Reiner, Tripp-Delmont-Armour, Senior – Guard
Reiner was selected to the All-State team for the first time averaging 17.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game with 72 steals. The Nighthawks went 13-10 and lost to Centerville 66-45 in the SoDak 16 on Feb. 29.

Allie Kohn – Lemmon, Senior – Guard
Kohn was selected to her first All-State team by averaging 14.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season. Lemmon went 19-4 and lost to James Valley Christian 61-50 in the SoDak 16 on Feb. 29.

Claire Verhust – Harding County, Senior – Guard
Verhust made the All-State team for the first time, averaging 11.7 points per game with 74 steals this season. Harding County went 23-2 and finished in sixth place at the Class B State Tournament.

Courtney Sees – Avon, Senior – Guard
Sees earned her first All-State selection by averaging 15.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season. The Pirates went 16-6 and advanced to the Region 5B semifinals.

Josie Brouwer – Andes Central-Dakota Christian, Junior – Guard

Brouwer earned her first All-State selection by averaging 17 points and seven rebounds per game. The Thunder went 14-9 and lost to Ethan 62-59 in the SoDak 16 on Feb. 29.

CLASS AA

First Team

Mahli Abdouch – O’Gorman, Senior – Guard
Abdouch made the All-State First Team for the third time in her career and was the Class AA Player of the Year. Abdouch averaged 16.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season while leading the Knights to a 24-0 record and the Class AA State Championship. Abdouch is committed to playing at South Dakota State next season.

Sawyer Stoebner – Mitchell, Senior – Guard
Stoebner earned her third All-State selection after making the first team in 2023 and the second team in 2022. Stoebner averaged 15.8 points and 4.3 assists with 72 steals to lead the Kernels to a 20-4 record and fourth place at the Class AA State Tournament.

Alyvia Padgett – Brandon Valley, Sophomore – Guard
Padgett earned her first All-State selection averaging 13.8 points and three assists per game for the Lynx this season. Brandon Valley went 19-5 and finished as the runner-up to O’Gorman at the Class AA State Tournament.

Taaliyah Porter – Rapid City Stevens, Junior – Guard
Porter was named to the All-State team for the first time after averaging 19.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season. The Raiders finished 13-11 and advanced to the Class AA State Tournament.

Brinley Alternburg – Sioux Falls Jefferson, Freshman – Guard
Alternburg made the All-State team for the first time after averaging 17.1 points and 3.1 assists per game this season. The Cavaliers went 18-6 and finished in third place at the Class AA State Tournament.

Grace Peterson – Sioux Falls Washington, Junior – Forward
Peterson averaged 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Warriors this season. This is Peterson’s second All-State selection after making the second team in her sophomore year. The Warriors went 9-12 and lost to Harrisburg 59-38 in the SoDak 16 on Mar. 1.

Second Team

Jaidyn Dunn – Sioux Falls Jefferson, Senior – Forward
Dunn earned her second All-State selection after making the second team last season. Dunn averaged 12.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while leading the Cavaliers to the State Tournament. Dunn is committed to play at South Dakota State next season.

Reese Terwilliger – Pierre, Senior – Forward/Center
Terwilliger made the second team for the second straight year after averaging 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Governors this season. Pierre went 17-7 and finished in third place at the Class AA State Tournament.

Lennix DuPris – Pierre, Junior – Guard
DuPris earned her first All-State selection after averaging 14.3 points and 4.4 rebounds with 75 steals this season.

Abby Flanagan – Harrisburg, Senior – Guard
Flanagan earned All-State honors for the first time by averaging 12.1 points and five rebounds per game for the Tigers this season. Harrisburg went 14-10 and finished in fourth place at the Class AA State Tournament.

Hamtyn Heinz – Huron, Senior – Guard
Heinz was named to the All-State team for the first time after averaging 15.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season. Huron went 7-14 and lost 63-36 to Pierre in the SoDak 16 on Mar. 1.

Taryn Hermansen – Aberdeen Central, Sophomore – Center
Hermansen averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles to earn All-State honors for the first time. Aberdeen Central went 9-12 and lost 72-48 to Spearfish in the SoDak 16.
