High school girls basketball: Class AA, B state tournaments underway in Sioux Falls, Huron

The Class AA and Class B State Girls Basketball Tournaments kicked off on Thursday. Class AA is being played at The Pentagon in Sioux Falls, while the Class B tournament is being played at Huron Arena.

High school girls basketball: Class AA, B state tournaments underway in Sioux Falls, Huron

The Class AA and Class B State Girls Basketball Tournaments kicked off on Thursday. Class AA is being played at The Pentagon in Sioux Falls, while the Class B tournament is being played at Huron Arena.

Wolsey-Wessington, Wall, Ethan and Viborg-Hurley picked up wins in Class B and Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Jefferson, Pierre and Harrisburg won in Class AA.

The semifinals will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.

Class B

No. 1 Wolsey-Wessington 53, No. 8 Jones County 42

A strong start and finish led the Warbirds victory on Thursday afternoon. They led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored Jones County 18-11 in the final frame.

Leah Williams led Wolsey-Wessington with 15 points and five rebounds. Mya Boomsma had 14 points and six rebounds. Mallory Miller had eight points and nine rebounds.

Jones County was led by Mallory Valburg who had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jodie Dugan had eight points.

No. 5 Wall 58, No. 4 Sully Buttes 50

Wall trailed by two heading into the fourth and the Lady Eagles then outscored the Chargers 21-11 in the final quarter to get the win. That was after Sully Buttes outscored Wall 16-6 in the third quarter to take the lead.

Paige Kjerstad led the Lady Eagles with 25 points and five rebounds. Nora Dinger had 17 points and Rhea Tuckers had nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Chargers were led by Lydia Hill who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Stevie Wittlers had 13 points and Addison Chicoine had 12 points.

No. 2 Ethan 55, No. 7 Castlewood 53

Leah Klock hit the game winner with 6.6 seconds left to move the Rustlers on to the semifinals. The Rustlers went into the fourth quarter trailing 44-32 and then went on to outscore Ethan 21-11 in the final quarter but that wasn’t enough as the comeback came up short. The Warriors outscored Ethan 24-11 in the second quarter to gain the lead.

Ethan was led by Madeline Bartscher who had 19 points. Marissa Storm and Ava Lingemann each had 15 points.

Madeline Horn led Castlewood with 22 points. Mackenzie Everson had 11 points and Presley Knecht had eight points.

No. 3 Viborg-Hurley 64, No. 6 Howard 46

The Cougars led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored Howard 42-28 in the next two quarters and that was enough for them to advance.

Viborg-Hurley was led by Denae Mach who had 25 points. Estelle Lee had 19 points. Coral Mason had nine points and 13 rebounds.

Howard was led by Abby Aslesen who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Trinity Palmquist had 13 points.

Class AA

No. 1 Sioux Falls Washington 48, No. 8 Watertown 24

The top seeded Warriors controlled the game throughout as they doubled up the Arrows.

Brooklyn Harpe led Washington with 19 points and nine rebounds. Grace Peterson had nine points and five rebounds.

The Arrows were led by Maddy Rhode who had eight points. Emery Thury had seven points.

No. 4 Sioux Falls Jefferson 50, No. 5 Mitchell 34

The first and third quarters were kind to the Cavaliers on Thursday as they outscored the Kernels 32-13 in those two quarters and that led to the 16-point win.

Cierra Watkins led SFJ with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kassidy Larsen had nine points and Ashlen Johnson had eight points.

Addie Siemsen led the Kernels with 13 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Vanovershelde had 10 points and Sawyer Stoeberner had nine points and 12 rebounds.

No. 2 Pierre 42, No. 3 Rapid City Stevens 34

It was steady victory for the Governors as they won three of the four quarters and the two teams tied in the fourth.

Remmington Price led Pierre with 15 points. Lennix Durpis had eight points and Ayvrie Kaiser had seven points and six rebounds.

The Raiders were led by Isabell Higgins who had 13 points and 16 rebounds. Taaliyah Porter had nine points and seven rebounds.

No. 6 Harrisburg 53, No. 3 O’Gorman 41

The Tigers were able to pull away from the Knights in the fourth quarter as they outscored them 21-14 in the final frame.

Harrisburg was led by Sadie Mehrman who had 21 points. Hannah Eide had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kayleigh Hybertson had nine points.

Mahli Abdouch led OG with 12 points. Lucy Moore had 11 points and four rebounds.
