Jackrabbit volleyball rallies past ORU to remain undefeated

TULSA, Okla. — South Dakota State had to come back from a 2-0 deficit, but the Jackrabbits rallied to remain undefeated on Thursday night.

Oral Roberts (2-12, 0-1) took a close first two sets 25-23 and 25-22. The Jackrabbits (12-0, 1-0) then won the third set 25-20 to gain some momentum and pulled away in the fourth set 25-16 to force a fifth. The Jacks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth set but ORU came back to make it 7-6. SDSU then went on a 6-1 run to go up 13-7 and then scored two of the next four points to win the final set 15-9.

The Jacks had 60 kills as a team and the Golden Eagles had 56. SDSU had 60 digs and ORU had 59. The Jacks had 56 assists and the Golden Eagles had 59. SDSU had 12 aces and seven blocks. ORU had nine aces and three blocks.

Sydni Schetnan Sylvie Zgonc led SDSU with 17 kills each. Zgonc also had 13 dig and Schetnan had three blocks. Madison Burr had 11 kills, four blocks and three aces. Rylee Martin had 45 assists and 11 digs. Alia Schlimgen had nine digs and three assists. Camryn Honn had six assists and six digs. Katie Van Egdom had eight kills.

The 12-0 start is the best start in the Division I era for the Jacks and it is the longest overall win streak since 2004. SDSU’s best start to a season came in 2000 when it started 14-0.

The Jacks will play at Denver (5-6, 0-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Central time. SDSU will then play its home opener on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. against Kansas City. That will be the official opening of First Bank & Trust Arena.
