BROOKINGS – The ‘Chutes put up 19 runs in two games, but that proved to be not enough as Sioux Falls East swept Brookings in a Junior American Legion doubleheader on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field.

East took advantage of 11 hits and seven errors by the home team to capture Game 1, 12-10, and then, the Sioux Falls squad put up 14 runs over the final three innings to rally to a 20-9 win in the nightcap.

Brookings travels to Yankton today for a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m. at Riverside before returning to Shelden for a 1 p.m. matchup with Sioux Falls West on Sunday.

Tanner Shepardson had the hot bat with three hits, which included a double, and two RBIs. Preston Helmbolt added a pair of singles and a run batted in while Trevor Berreth doubled and drove in two and Parker Beers picked up two RBIs to go along with a hit.

Berreth was saddled with the loss after giving up nine runs – four earned – on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts over five innings.

Shepardson tossed the final two frames and allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits with three strikeouts.

The ‘Chutes took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first; plated five in the fourth to retake an 8-6 advantage; but couldn’t keep East off the base paths or the scoreboard as the visitors rallied for the win.

Shepardson stayed hot with a 5-for-5 performance at the dish, which included another double. Theo Burns added two hits, including a double, with two RBIs, while Daniel Messerli and Rhett Zelinsky each had two hits and a run batted in.

Christian Mediger also drove in two runs with a single in the fourth.

Burns suffered the loss after allowing six runs – four earned – on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings of work.

Parker Rykhus threw the fifth and gave up five unearned runs on four hits and a walk as Helmbolt tossed the sixth, giving up five runs – three earned – on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Shepardson finished and let in four runs – three earned – on three hits and two walks with a strikeout.
