College volleyball: Jackrabbits can’t complete upset against Coyotes

VERMILLION — South Dakota State got off to a fast start in a rivalry matchup with USD but they couldn’t close out the match as the Coyotes rallied to win three straight sets in the Jackrabbits’ 3-2 loss on Tuesday night.

The Jacks got off to a great start in the first set as a 9-3 run that included three kills from Katie Van Egdom built an 11-7 lead. USD responded by scoring six straight points to regain the lead and the Coyotes took an 18-16 lead into a timeout late in the set. SDSU responded by going on a 9-1 run to close the set and pick up a 25-19 victory.

The Coyotes began the second set on a 6-3 run and ran their lead up to 15-8 before Sylvie Zgonc fueled an 8-1 run with six kills to tie the set at 16-16. SDSU and USD went back-and-forth before the Coyotes had matchpoint at 24-23 but the Jacks scored three straight points and finished off the set with a kill by Zgonc to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Jackrabbits had a great chance to pull off the upset from there but couldn’t come up with the clincher. USD held the lead throughout most of a competitive third set but SDSU came back to tie at at 23 before a service error by Masa Scheierman and an attack error by Van Egdom gave the Coyotes their first set of the night by a score of 25-23.

The Jacks battled to an 8-8 tie early in the fourth set but USD ripped off a 12-2 run to take a 20-10 lead on the way to a 25-14 victory. With momentum on their side, the Coyotes began the fifth set with an 8-2 run before the Jacks scored five straight points to tie the set at 8-8 but a service error by Zgonc opened the door and allowed USD to go on a 7-2 run to win the fifth set 15-10 and complete the comeback.

Zgonc finished with a match-high 26 kills for the Jackrabbits while Van Egdom had 12 kills. Scheierman finished with nine kills, Sydni Schetnan had eight kills and Winter had three kills.

Raegen Reilly had 25 assists for SDSU while Rylee Martin had 24 assists.

Akeela Jefferson had three aces while Zgonc, Winter, Stella Winterfeld and Reilly had one ace each.

Schetnan had 5.5 blocks for the Jacks while Martin had four blocks, Scheierman had two blocks and Winter and Zgonc had 1.5 blocks each. Van Egdom also had 0.5 blocks.

Winterfeld had 15 digs for the Jacks while Zgonc had 11 digs and Joslyn Richardson had eight digs. Reilly had seven digs, Winter had five digs, Van Egdom had four digs and Martin had three digs while Scheierman finished with one dig.

Madison Harms and Kylen Sealock had 16 kills each for USD while Brooklyn Schram finished with 47 assists. Farris led the Coyotes with three aces while Harms had four blocks. Farris also finished with a team-high 30 digs.

The Jackrabbits fell to 2-6 in the Summit League and 4-16 overall with the loss. SDSU will return to action on Thursday night when they host St. Thomas at Frost Arena in Brookings.
