Bandits swept in doubleheader against Renner

The Bandits fell to 6-10 ahead of this weekend's Dakota Classic Tournament.

RENNER – The Brookings Post 74 Bandits Senior Legion baseball team dropped a pair of games, falling to Renner by scores of 5-2 and 9-3 on Tuesday night.

The Bandits fell to 6-10 with the losses and will return to the field when they open the Dakota Classic Tournament in Sioux Falls against Lennox. The first game of the tournament will begin at 12 p.m. on Friday.

Game One

Renner 5, Brookings 2

Renner started the doubleheader hot, scoring a run on Kyle Konechne’s groundout in the bottom of the second inning and adding four runs on RBI singles by Hunter Den Boer, Zachary Dunham and B Jacobsen in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bandits had a small rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Owen Schneider was hit with a pitch and Zach Struck hit a two-run homer in the following at bat but Brookings couldn’t muster enough offense to complete the comeback.

Schneider started for Brookings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Tate Helmbolt pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and a walk with three strikeouts.

Austin Clark went 1-for-3 with a double while Jon Kahler and Jase Bauer each went 1-for-3.

Game Two

Renner 9, Brookings 3

The Royals flexed their power with three home runs in a 9-3 win in the nightcap of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Renner got on the board first again in game two-getting a three-run homer by Den Boer to take a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. Brookings loaded the bases in the top of the second inning with a single by David Brink, a walk by Winston Plummer and a single by Austin Clark but Sam Johnson delivered the lone run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1.

Den Boer got the run back for the Royals on a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning and Konechne smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 7-1 game. Dunham drove in another run for the Royals with a double later in the fourth inning but the Bandits scraped together a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning on a double by Austin Clark and another sacrifice fly by Johnson.

Den Boer capped the game with his fifth RBI with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Breck Wilson started for the Bandits, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Will Conrad pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on one hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

Struck went 2-for-3 with a walk. Plummer went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Clark went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Helmbolt went 1-for-5. Merritt went 1-for-3 with a walk. Brink went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
