VOLGA – A Sisseton man was arrested after allegedly leading authorities on a pursuit in and southeast of Volga early Thursday morning, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrested was 35-year-old Zacariah Ryan on suspicion of ingestion of a controlled substance, DUI, reckless driving, intentional damage to property, driving without a license, speeding, eluding, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, stop sign violation and inoperable headlight, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

Sebring said a deputy attempted to stop a 2015 Jeep Cherokee at 3:35 a.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Kasan Avenue in Volga.

“The vehicle immediately fled, leading the deputy to pursue,” Sebring said. “The vehicle left Volga, and the deputy pursued the vehicle for 6 miles. The driver then pulled into a driveway near the intersection of 213th Street and 467thAvenue and went into a field. The deputy stopped pursuing the vehicle into a field due to muddy conditions.”

Sebring said officers from the Brookings Police Department and South Dakota State University Police Department were called to assist deputies with surrounding the field and locating the driver. The vehicle was then located in a field with no occupants.

“With the assistance of the other agencies along with the Sheriff’s Office drone and UTV, Zacariah Ryan was located laying in a ditch full of water. Zacariah was determined to have been the driver of the fleeing vehicle and was brought to the Brookings County Detention Center,” Sebring reported.

No injuries were reported.
