BROOKINGS — The Brookings boys’ soccer team lost a physical game to Sioux Falls Washington on Tuesday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
The 2-1 game was decided on Antonio Jamal’s goal with 3:54 left in the second half.
The Warriors took the early advantage when Carson Coulter scored with an assist from Jimmy Saravia Rivas in the 13th minute and the 1-0 lead held going into halftime. But the Bobcats came out aggressively after halftime and created a rush that led to an own goal that tied the game 39 seconds into the second half.
“At halftime, we were just kind of harping on the intensity of the game and how everybody on the field needed to make an impact,” Brookings coach Reece Weber said. “It was good to see the boys bring that intensity at the start of the half and get a goal right away.”
Tony Nguyen did his best to make sure the game remained tied throughout the second half and made nine saves but everything came down to a late corner kick. With the ball in front of the net, Jamal was there to stuff it in and give the Warriors the victory but Weber was still impressed with the play of Nguyen.
“Tony was big time (Tuesday night),” Weber said. “He made some really good saves. We would have been in a worse position if he didn’t play well so he did pretty well tonight.”
Weber was also optimistic thanks to the adjustment his team made in the second half.
“Our intensity was great in the second half,” Weber said. “The game could have gone the other way with some chances. Unfortunately, they fell the other way, but overall I was satisfied with the intensity and the effort.”
Forrest Giard and Brayden Schreiber each had two shots on goal in the game. Dominic VanHofwegen had two shots. Griffin Bachman had one shot.
The loss dropped Brookings to 5-6-2 on the season. With one game remaining, the Bobcats will head to Pierre on Thursday evening with hopes that they can pick up another win ahead of the start of the Class AA playoffs next week.
“We need a confidence boost going into the playoffs and it appears that we’ll have a really good chance to do that on Thursday,” Weber said. “It’s going to be another intense, physical game. So we’re looking forward to it and hopefully, we can get a good result.”
