BROOKINGS — The Brookings Cubs took care of business on Sunday night against the Baltic Riverdogs as they won 15-0 in just six innings at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings jumped out to a 12-0 lead and then cruised to a 15-run rule victory.

The Cubs batted around the order in the first inning and put eight runs on the board. Chase McDaniel got the scoring going as he launched one over the right field fence to put the Cubs up 1-0. A single from Rhett Zelinsky and walks from Noah Buss and Jayden Gibson loaded the bases up with one out. Zelinsky scored on a ground out from Noel Burgos and Parker Winghart followed with a two-run double to make it 4-0.

Zach Shastay hit Winghart home with a single and Justin Cofell and Henry Hammrich walked to load the bases up. McDaniel was up next and he hit one down the left field line that landed fair and that cleared the bases and gave the Cubs an eight-run lead heading into the second.

Brookings added four more runs in the second. Buss was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Daniel Messerli came on as a courtesy runner for him. Messerli scored on an error and Shastay hit a two-run double to make it 11-0. Shastay made it to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a sacrifice fly from Cofell.

Zelinsky came to the plate with one out in the third and hit one over the left field wall to make it 13-0. Brookings then had the bases loaded in the fifth after Zelinsky hit a single, Buss was hit by a pitch and Gibson walked. Zelinsky then scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 14-0.

The Cubs then ended the game in the sixth. Shastay led off the inning with a single and then came home on a single from McDaniel and that put Brookings back in the win column.

Brookings had 11 hits as a team. McDaniel was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Shastay was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Winghart was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Zelinsky was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Gibson was 1-for-2. Burgos had two RBIs without a hit and Cofell had an RBI as well.

Trevor Wookey pitched all six innings for the Cubs. He gave up five hits and had three strikeouts and two walks.

Brookings is 12-3 on the season. The Cubs were supposed to play Luverne (Minnesota) on Monday night but the game got canceled due to Luverne needing to make up league games. Brookings hosts the Renner Monarchs on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
