BALTIC — The Sioux Valley volleyball team’s win streak to open the season came to an end Thursday night as the Cossacks fell to Baltic in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

The Cossacks swept Beresford in their opening match of the tournament on Thursday for their seventh win in a row, but were then swept by the Watchdogs later in the night.

The Cossacks will conclude the Big East Tournament on Saturday in Salem.

Sioux Valley 3, Beresford 0

The Cossacks had to work for the sweep against the Watchdogs as each set was settled by seven points or less.

Sioux Valley opened up the first set with a 7-1 run. Beresford cut the lead to 11-9 but the Cossacks then went on a 9-2 run to go up 18-11. The Cossacks were able to carry that lead to the finish line, taking set one 25-20.

The Cossacks led 9-3 in set two. Later in the set they led 20-14 and were able to outscore the Watchdogs 5-4 in the next nine points to take a 2-0 lead.

The two teams traded points to begin the third set but then Beresford took a 10-6 lead. The Watchdogs then led 16-10 but Sioux Valley went on a 8-2 run to tie things up. The points went back-and-forth until a Lacey Langland kill gave the Cossacks match point at 24-23. Beresford was able to tie things up and that extended the set to 26-26. That’s when back-to-back kills from Adison Renkly gave the Cossacks the third set win and the sweep.

Sioux Valley was led by Renkly and Kaedyn Sapp who each had 13 kills. Sapp had 14 digs and Renkly had seven. Langland had eight kills and Caitlin Russell had 10 digs. Emma Gorvin had three kills, three aces and six digs. Sunny Hesby had 17 assists and Machael Gerasch had 18 assists.
