College volleyball: Jackrabbits sweep St. Thomas in Brookings

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State volleyball team bounced back from a five-set loss to South Dakota on Tuesday night with a three-set sweep of St. Thomas on Thursday.

The Jackrabbits (5-16, 3-6) led 8-7 in the first set and then went on a 6-0 run to make it 14-7. St. Thomas (5-15, 1-8) cut the lead to 17-16, but the Jacks then went on an 8-1 run to close out the first set and take a 1-0 lead.

The first set was tied 5-5 when SDSU scored three straight points. The Jacks then led 21-18 and scored four of the next six points to go up 2-0. In the third set SDSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Jacks then led 14-7 but the Tommies scored four straight points to cut the lead to three. SDSU would push the lead back up to six, leading 22-16 and won the third set 25-21 and the Jacks picked up their third win in conference play.

SDSU had 44 kills as a team and 58 digs. UST had 35 kills and 50 digs. The Jacks had 38 assists, seven blocks and four aces. The Tommies had 35 assists, five blocks and two aces.

The Jacks were led by Katie Von Egdom who had 12 kills and 13 digs. Mesa Scheierman had seven kills and seven digs. Raegen Reilly had 19 assists and 12 digs. Sylvie Zgonc had 10 kills and Stella Winterfeld had 18 digs. Rylee Martin had 15 assists and Elyse Winter had six kills.

Tezra Rudzitis and Ella Gustafson each had eight kills to lead the Tommies. Kealy Moran had 21 assists and six digs. Ella Voegle had 22 digs and Ellie Gustafson had nine digs. Ava Wild and Megan Wetter each had six kills.

SDSU hosts Kansas City in its Pink Game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
