Chutes sweep Renner at home

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes improved to 12-6 on Wednesday as they swept a home doubleheader against Renner.

Brookings came back from a 3-0 deficit in the first game and won 5-3 and then followed that with a 6-3 victory in game two. The Chutes host a doubleheader against Mitchell on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Game One
Brookings 5, Renner 3
Brookings slowly worked its way to a victory in game one as it trailed 3-1 after the first inning.

The first run of the game for Mitchell came on a single and then a fielder’s choice and another RBI single made it 3-0. Cooper Schneider hit a one-out single and then scored on an error to give the Chutes their first run of the game.

The Chutes then cut the lead to one in the second. Gavin Hammrich led off the inning with a single and then made it to third on a double from Ryker Anderson. He then came home on a sacrifice fly from Tate Christopherson, making it 3-2 heading into the third.

Brookings gained the lead in the third. Jay Harris got on with a single with two outs and Talon Hyde followed with a walk. Each runner advanced on a wild pitch and then both runners scored on a single from Hammrich to make it 4-3.

The Chutes then extended the lead to 5-3 in the fourth. Max Jensen led off the inning with a single and made his way to second on a wild pitch. He then came home on a single from Christopherson and Brookings had a two-run lead going into the fifth.

Renner had just two baserunners in the final three innings and the Chutes were able to keep them from scoring and took the victory in game one.

Brookings had nine hits in the game. Christopherson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hammrich was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jensen was 2-for-3, Harris and Anderson were each 1-for-3 and Schneider was 1-for-4.

Nolan Wagner got the start for the Chutes and pitched a complete game. He gave up three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two
Brookings 6, Renner 3

The Chutes rode a five-run first inning all the way to the finish line and came away with a doubleheader sweep in game two.

Schneider was hit by a pitch with one out and then scored on a single from Jase Bauer. Gavin Hammrich then hit a double and Tyson Antonen reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases. Wagner hit both Bauer and Hammrich home with a double and Antonen scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Tane Friedrich then hit Wagner home with a single to give the Chutes a 5-0 lead heading into the second.

Renner scored all of their runs in the fourth. A double, a walk and an error loaded the bases with one out. Two runs scored from a double and another run came home on a single to make it 5-3 heading into the fifth.

Brookings added to its lead in the fifth. Schneider led off the inning and reached on an error. He then scored on a double from Bauer to make it 6-3. The Chutes kept Renner off the board in the final two innings to secure the victory.

The Chutes had six hits. Bauer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Wagner was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Friedrich was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Gammrich was 1-for-3.

Hyde pitched a complete game for the Chutes and gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
