The Brooking Bombers Red 13U team came away with a doubleheader sweep of Mitchell in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Bombers Red completes DH sweep with walk-off victory

ooking Bombers Red 13U team came away with a doubleheader sweep of Mitchell in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won a defensive and pitching battle 3-1 in game one of the doubleheader. The Bombers then came back from five runs down in game two and won in walk-off fashion to earn the doubleheader sweep.

Brookings is now 19-8 on the season. The Bombers will host Volga on Monday at 4 p.m.

Game One
Brookings 3, Mitchell 1
The two teams combined for just four hits in the game but the Bombers made the most of six walks.

Brookings took the lead in the second inning. Cooper Drawdy drew a walk to begin the Bombers half of the inning and then stole second. He advanced to third on a ground out from Ty Johnson and then scored on a ground out from Grayson Wagner to make it 1-0.

Mitchell tied the game in the top of the third. A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases up with one out and a sacrifice fly tied the game. Fortunately for the Bombers, they were able to get out of the inning with no further damage.

It didn’t take long for Brookings to regain the lead as it scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Carter Nielsen and Mason Burzlaff each walked to put runners on second and third with two outs. Nielsen scored on a wild pitch and Burzlaff came home on a single from Hayden Jones to make it 3-1 heading into the fourth.

Mitchell had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the sixth, but Wagner struck out the final two batters and the Bombers hung on for the victory.

Jones had the only hit for the Bombers and he had an RBI. Wagner had an RBI without a hit.

Ty Delbridge got the start for Brookings and pitched four innings. He gave up one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Wagner pitched the final two innings and had four strikeouts and one walk without giving up a hit.

Game Two
Brookings 8, Mitchell 7
Brookings scored four runs in the final inning and Jennings Huntimer capped off the comeback with a walk-off single.

Burghardt and Jones led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Burghardt scored on a passed ball and Drawdy got on base with a single after that.

Delbridge then came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit both Jones and Drawdy to tie the game. Wagner then struck out but Huntimer came through to hit Johnson home and the Bombers came away with the sweep.

The Bombers got on the board first in the first inning. Burzlaff drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on an error. He then scored on a ground out from Jones and Brookings led 1-0 heading into the second.

Mitchell answered with four runs in the top of the second. The first run of the inning came on an RBI double and then a run on a passed ball gave Mitchell the lead. An RBI single followed by another RBI double put Mitchell up 4-1.

Another run from an RBI single in the top of the third made it 5-1. Dario McSweeney then led off the bottom of the fourth and reached on an error. He then scored on a double from Burzlaff to make it 5-2.

Mitchell answered again with two more runs to make it 7-2 in the top of the fifth. The first run came from a double and then the next one was from an error. However, Brookings got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning.

Delbridge led off the bottom of the fifth and reached on an error. He then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Delbridge scored on a single from Huntimer and Huntimer scored on a single from McSweeney to make it 7-4 heading into the final inning where they completed the comeback.

Brookings had eight hits in the game. Huntimer 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Delbridge went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Jones and McSweeney were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burzlaff was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Drawdy was 1-for-2 and Burghardt was 1-for-3.

Drawdy pitched the first four innings for the Bombers and gave up five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. McSweeny got the win as he pitched the final two innings and gave up two unearned runs on one hit with four strikeouts and three walks.
