Bullets swept in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG – The Brookings Bullets 16U team dropped a pair of games in Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bullets lost a hard fought game 4-3 in game one and then lost 14-10 in game two. Brookings is now 3-21-1 and will host the Buffalo Wild Wings 16U Tournament in Brookings next weekend.

Game One
Harrisburg 4, Brookings 3
Harrisburg scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and that allowed the Tigers to take the first game of the doubleheader.

Brookings led 1-0 after the first inning. Parker Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then made his way to third and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bullets then extended their lead to 3-0 in the third. Parker Nielsen reached on an error with two outs and then scored on a double from Connor Jones. Jones then made his way home on a wild pitch and Brookings led 3-0 heading into the fourth.

Harrisburg got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers led the inning off with a double and that runner scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 heading into the fifth.

Brookings had a runner on second in the top of the fifth but were unable to bring him home. That allowed the Tigers to stay in the game and they took advantage, scoring three runs in the final inning.

The Tigers led off the final inning with back-to-back singles. One of those runners came home on a single and then a two-run single ended the game and gave Harrisburg the win.

Brookings had two hits. Jones was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Sutton Schneider was 1-for-3 as well. Schneider also pitched a complete game and gave up four earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game Two
Harrisburg 14, Brookings 10
Both teams’ bats came alive in the second game as they combined for 22 hits.

Brookings held a 4-2 lead at the end of the first inning. Nielsen reached on an error and both Jones and Sonnenberg walked to load the bases up with one out. Rylan Hesser then hit a two-run double and Schneider followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Harrisburg scored a run on a steal of home and a single to make it a two-run game heading into the second.

The Bullets added three runs in the top of the second. Carter Reicks hit a single to lead off the inning and Nielsen walked and Jones singled to load the bases up with one out. Sonneberg hit Reicks home with a double and Hesser hit a two-run single to make it 7-2.

Brookings then pushed the lead to 10-2 in the fourth. Sonnenberg hit an RBI triple and Hesser hit him home with a double to make it 9-2. Schneider then capped the inning off with an RBI double.

The bottom of the inning is where the Tigers gained control as they scored 12 runs. The first two runs came on a double and a fielder’s choice made it 10-5. The next run came on a double and then a three-run double made it 10-9. A run on an error from the catcher and a two-run triple gave the Tigers the lead. A steal of home and a run from an error pushed the lead to 14-10 heading into the final inning.

Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning but the next three batters went down one-two-three to end the game.

Brookings had 12 hits. Hesser was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Schneider was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sonnenberg went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Reicks was 2-for-3. Jones was 1-for-3.
