Bobcats finish 12th at Yankton Invitational

YANKTON — The Brookings Bobcats finished in 12th place as they competed at the Yankton Invitational at the Hillcrest Country Club on Friday morning.

The Bobcats finished with a team score of 348 at the event, which left Brookings coach Andy Lee and the rest of his team disappointed despite the challenges of the course and the weather.

“I was disappointed in our result today. Hillcrest is a tough course and the wind made things challenging, but there’s no excuses,” Lee said. “We did not keep the right mindset today.

Tyson Lunn led the way for Brookings, tying for 40th place with an 85. Rhys Heiberger tied for 46th while shooting an 86 at the event while Issak Earley, who tied for 60th with a score of 88 and Andrew Heinze, who tied for 68th with a score of 89 rounded out the team scoring.

Jase Bauer finished 89th with a score of 94 and Liam Heiberger tied for 92nd with a score of 96 at the event and while Lee was able to find some positives, he realized that most of his team can use Friday’s performance as motivation to improve.

“We were able to keep four scores in the 80s, which a few years ago we would be thrilled about, but this team has evolved and we have high expectations with this current group,” Lee said. “Sometimes it’s not your day and you don’t play your best but we need to be more positive. It’s easy when you play well but we need to respond differently to adversity and keep our identity.”

Watertown finished in first place as a team with a score of 301. Brandon Valley and Harrisburg tied for second place with a score of 308 while Pierre (309) and O’Gorman (310) rounded out the top five.

Ty Lenards of Watertown finished in first place with a one-under par 71 while Tate Mauney of O’Gorman won a scorecard playoff with Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein for second place after both players finished with a round of 74.

Tea Area’s Derek Andersen, Watertown’s Jonathan Lake, Harrisburg’s Hayden Scott and Brandon Valley’s Will Peterson tied for fourth place after shooting a 75 on Friday.

Although Friday was a disappointing outing, the Bobcats have a quick opportunity to rebound as they’ll host their home invitational at the Brookings Country Club beginning Monday at 10 a.m.

“These guys will learn and be ready for our home invite on Monday,” Lee said. “I look forward to seeing them improve.”
