BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bullets 16U team dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Yankton Blacksox on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

The first game went to extra innings and the Blacksox prevailed with a 15-12 win. The Bullets then lost the next game 8-5.

Brookings is now 1-15-1 on the season. The Bullets will host a doubleheader against Renner on Wednesday night starting at 5 p.m.

Yankton 15, Brookings 12

After a back-and-forth seven innings, the Blacksox scored three runs in the top of the eighth and then shut down the Bullets in the bottom of the inning to get the victory.

Yankton opened up the game with two runs in the top of the first. Three-straight two-out singles made it 1-0 and then a run on an error made it 2-0. Brookings got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Parker Witte walked to begin the inning and stole second. Tate Sonnenberg then came through with a two-out single to make it 2-1 heading into the second.

The Blacksox extended the lead to 6-1 in the second. The first run of the inning came on a ground out and then a two-run single made it 5-1. An RBI single then gave Yankton a five-run lead heading into the bottom of the second.

Brookings cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third. Parker Nielsen and Connor Jones led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Nielsen scored on a single from Sonnenberg and Jones stole home to make it a three-run game heading into the fourth.

The Bullets scored another run in the fourth. Carter Reicks reached on a dropped third strike and then two walks loaded the bases. Reicks then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.

Yankton pushed the lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth. The Blacksox hit back-to-back two-out singles and then both base runners scored to make it a four-run game.

Vince Doblar led off the bottom of the fifth with a single. He then stole second, advanced to third and scored on a ground out to make it 8-5. Two runs on errors and a run on a ground out  in the top of sixth made it 11-5 Yankton.

Brookings responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Jones led off the inning with a single and scored on a double from Sonnenberg. Doblar followed that with a double of his own to make it 11-7. Doblar scored on a passed ball and Hesser stole home to make it 11-9 heading into what was supposed to be the final inning.

Yankton scored an insurance run on a double in the seventh. However, Brookings was able to put three across in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.

All three runs in the bottom of the seventh came with two outs. Jones reached on a dropped third strike and Sonnenberg followed with a walk. Doblar hit Jones home with a double and Brennan Cordes hit both Sonneberg and Doblar home with a single to make it 12-12. The Bullets were unfortunately unable to get Cordes home and the game went into extra’s.

Three-straight singles to begin the eighth put the Blacksox up 14-12. They scored another run on a steal of home to give them a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Witte was hit by a pitch and Jones was walked to give the Bullets two base runners with two outs, but Sonnenberg hit into a pop up and Brookings’ comeback came up short.

Brookings had 12 hits. Sonnenberg was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Doblar was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Cordes was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Wes Van Ede and Jones were each 2-for-4. Nielsen was 1-for-6.

The Blacksox led 4-1 after the first two innings and that lead held until the end of the game in the second game of the doubleheader.

Yankton scored three runs in the top of the first. The first two runs of the game came from RBI singles and the next was on a wild pitch. Witte, Jones, Sonnenberg and Sutton Schneider drew walks in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1 heading into the second.

The Blacksox added a run on an error in the top of the second. Nielsen led off the bottom of the third with a single and then three more walks led to the second run of the game for the Bullets and made it 4-2 heading into the fourth.

The fourth would be the final inning of the game due to time. The Blacksox loaded the bases with nobody out and a walk and a two-run single made it 7-2. Yankton scored one more run on a passed ball to make it 8-2 heading into the final half inning.

Witte and Nielsen both walked with one out. Witte scored on wild pitch and Nielsen scored on a dropped third strike to make it 8-4. Jones reached on that dropped strike and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-5, but the Bullets were unable to score any more runs.
