Bandits split four games at Dakota Classic in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Post 74 Bandits American Legion baseball team split four games at the Dakota Classic Tournament last weekend.

After earning wins over Lennox and Shakopee (Minn.) and falling to Gretna (Neb.) and Casselton (N.D.), the Bandits are 8-10 on the season and will travel to Aberdeen for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Friday

Brookings 4, Lennox 2

Addison Ronning’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and helped the Bandits earn a 4-2 win to open the tournament on Friday afternoon.

Lennox scored the first two runs of the game on errors in the top of the first inning before Owen Schneider stole home to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Austin Clark led off the bottom of the second with a walk and stole second base before making his way around the bases to score and tie the game at 2-2.

Tate Helmbolt and Breck Hirrschoff sandwiched singles around a flyout by Schneider in the bottom of the fifth inning and Ronning singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Brookings added one more run on a groundout by Sam Johnson in the bottom of the sixth inning.

David Brink earned the win for Brookings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Helmbolt finished the game by getting the final two outs in the seventh inning.

Tane Friedrich doubled twice and scored a run in three at-bats. Breck Hirrschoff went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases. Helmbolt went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Johnson went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ronning went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jack Merritt walked twice and stole a base. Clark walked once and stole a base. Schneider stole a base and scored a run.

Gretna 8, Brookings 5

Kalvin Janssen opened the scoring for Gretna in the top of the first inning before Brookings took the lead on an RBI groundout by Johnson and an RBI single by Helmbolt in the bottom of the second inning.

Hayden Parrish tied the game with an RBI double in the top of the third, however, and took the lead when Bryce Lakers scored on a wild pitch and Janssen drove in a run on a groundout in the top of the fifth inning.

Schneider delivered an RBI triple and Hirrschoff tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning but Lakers put Gretna back on top with an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.

The Bandits mounted another rally in the bottom of the seventh when Schneider hit his second triple of the game and scored on a balk but Gretna put up three runs in the top of the eighth including a single by Joe Sullivan and a two-run error to put the game away.

Schneider went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored and an RBI. Merritt went 1-for-4. Brink went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Ronning went 1-for-1 with a double. Clark went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Tyson Antonen walked and scored a run and Freidrich drew a walk.

Hirrschoff started for the Bandits, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with a strikeout over five innings. Will Conrad allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk over two innings. Helmbolt allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits in one inning.

Saturday

Brookings 7, Shakopee 5

The Bandits jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on to defeat Shakopee in their lone game on Saturday.

Helmbolt and Schneider led off the game with walks before Hirrschoff drove both runners in with a triple to give the Bandits a 2-0 lead. Brink drove in another run with a two-out triple later in the first inning to put Brookings up 3-0 and Merritt stole home to put the Bandits up 4-0 in the top of the third inning.

After Helmbolt drove in two more runs with a triple in the top of the fourth inning, Hirrschoff drove him in on a groundout to give Brookings a seven-run advantage.

Shakopee cut into the lead with a Kaden Olson double in the bottom of the fourth inning and clawed their way back into the game on a Wynn Strait groundout, a passed ball, a triple by Alex Duncan and a single by Carson Schroeder. But Ryan

Lockrem and Clark combined for 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to close the game out for Brookings.

Tyson Antonen earned the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Lockrem allowed two hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings and Clark struck out a pair of batters in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Sunday

Casselton 8, Brookings 0

The Bandits were held to two hits as the Haymakers earned an 8-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

Merritt went 2-for-3 in the loss. Owen Schneider drew two walks and stole a base. Hirrschoff and Ronning both drew walks.

Clark took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks with eight strikeouts over six innings. Lockrem allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in the seventh inning.
