Bobcats 12th after first day of state tennis tournament

RAPID CITY — The Brookings Bobcats are in 12th place after competing on the first day of the SDHSAA Girls State Tennis Tournament at the Sioux Park & Parkview Tennis Complex on Thursday.

The Bobcats have 26 points after the first day of the tournament with three singles competitors advancing to the consolation semifinals.

Rapid City Stevens leads the tournament after the first day with 300 points followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln with 266 points, Watertown with 224 points, Mitchell with 220 points and Aberdeen Central with 217 points.

The tournament will conclude beginning at 9 a.m. MDT Friday.

Singles

11th-seeded Sophie Tanner lost to sixth-seeded Ellie Huber of O’Gorman 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Flight 1 bracket. Tanner rebounded to defeat Rapid City Central’s Angela Limun 10-1 in the consolation quarterfinals and will face Brandon Valley’s Keera Kriech in the consolation semifinals on Friday.

Anika Hooda was the 13th seed in Flight 2 and lost her first-round match to fourth-seeded Afton Keller of Sioux Falls Jefferson 6-1, 6-2. Hooda won her consolation quarterfinals match against Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Abbi Paulsen 10-8 and advances to Friday’s consolation semifinals match against Brandon Valley’s Sophia Menden.

Yuki Zhu was the 10th seed in the Flight 3 bracket. After losing her first-round match to seventh-seeded Sarah Jamous of O’Gorman 6-2, 6-1, Zhu advanced to the consolation semifinals via bye and will face Sioux Falls Washington’s Zoriah VanDeVendel on Friday.

Maya Gent was the 13th seed in Flight 6. After losing to Watertown’s Jade Smith 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, Gent defeated Rapid City Central’s Mia Rivers 10-0 to advance to the consolation semifinals, where she’ll face Brandon Valley’s Makenna Beck on Friday.

Lada Senchanka was the 12th seed in the Flight 4 bracket. Senchanka lost her first-round match to O’Gorman’s Wilnel Farhat 6-3, 6-3 and lost to Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Hazel Pederson 10-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.

Alison Glover was the 13th seed in Flight 5 and lost to fourth-seeded Cayda Weiss of Watertown 6-0, 6-0. Glover lost 10-5 to Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Vada Jacoby in the consolation quarterfinals.

Doubles

The team of Tanner and Hooda was the 11th seed in Flight 1. They lost to the sixth-seeded team of Julie Knie and Avery Tennant of Aberdeen Central 6-1, 6-1 in the first round but defeated Angela Limun and Kili Cole of Rapid City Central in the consolation quarterfinals 10-9. Tanner and Hooda’s run ended when they were defeated by Brandon Valley’s Keera Kriech and Claudia Scholten in the consolation semifinals.

The team of Zhu and Senchanka was the 11th seed in the second flight. They lost to the sixth-seeded team of Reese Comstock and Chloe Ladner (Aberdeen Central) 6-2, 6-3 in the first round but advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 10-2 win over Kristen Schlueter and Nevaeh Keenan of Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Zhu and Senchanka’s run ended when Zoriah VanDeVendel and Allyson Corp of Sioux Falls Washington advanced by default.

The team of Glover and Gent was the 13th seed in Flight 3. They lost to the fourth-seeded team of Mitchell’s Katie Morgan and Mia Larson 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and lost to the team of Hazel Pederson and Vada Jacoby of Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the consolation quarterfinals.
