Sioux Valley wins boys title, Flandreau wins girls at Big East Conference meet

The Sioux Valley Cossacks won the boys title and the Flandreau Fliers won the girls championship at the Big East Conference Meet at the River Ridge Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.

Sioux Valley wins boys title, Flandreau wins girls at Big East Conference meet

Cossacks' Carson Wosje and Fliers' Faith Wiese win individual titles as well

GARRETSON — The Sioux Valley Cossacks won the boys title and the Flandreau Fliers won the girls championship at the Big East Conference Meet at the River Ridge Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.

Sioux Valley’s Carson Wosje and Flandreau’s Faith Wiese also won individual titles at the meet as both teams prepare to take part in the SDHSAA Region 2A Cross Country Meet in Volga on Wednesday.

Sioux Valley

Boys

The Cossacks finished in first place at the meet as their total of 23 points were nine points ahead of second-place Beresford (32 points).

Wosje finished in first place with a time of 17:30.65. The Cossacks had two more runners in the top 10 as Tyrus Schulz finished sixth with a time of 19:05.43 and Bret Milton finished seventh with a time of 19:05.62.

Dubhlainn Vermeulen finished 12th with a time of 19:29.04; Levi Axtell finished 20th with a time of 20:15.90 and Carter Sapp finished 28th with a time of 21:17.62.

Girls

The Cossacks finished in second place as a team with a total of 30 points.

Maci Licht was the top finisher for Sioux Valley, placing second with a time of 20:24.11. Amia Ward also cracked the top-five, finishing fifth with a time of 21:12.55.

Ava Gatzke finished 13th with a time of 22:39.27; Amya Ward finished 16th with a time of 23:54.33 and Quynn Nielson finished 18th with a time of 24:33.55.

Flandreau

Boys

The Fliers finished in third place with a total of 36 points and had three runners in the top 10. Wyatt Kontz finished eighth with a time of 19:05.77 while Logan Kontz finished ninth with a time of 19:12.05 and Brenton Westberry finished 10th with a time of 19:25.23.

Sam Schmidt finished 13th with a time of 19:41.17; Nathaniel Hobbie finished 14th with a time of 19:42.99 and Daniel Hobbie finished 22nd with a time of 20:29.37.

Girls

The Fliers finished in first place in the women’s race, placing first out of a four-team field with seven points.

Faith Wiese finished in first place for the Fliers, posting a time of 18:43.27. Three more runners finished in the top 10 for Flandreau as Calla Wiese finished fifth with a time of 21:12.55, Kiley Westberry finished seventh with a time of 21:17.17 and Josie Hamilton finished ninth with a time of 21:58.50.

Tenley LeBrun finished 11th with a time of 22:18.43 and Morgan Sheppard finished 14th with a time of 22:45.84.
