Brookings goes undefeated in pool play, makes it to semifinals of Gold Bracket

RAPID CITY — The Brookings Bobcats won four of their five matches and went undefeated in pool play during the Rapid City Volleyball Tournament last weekend.

The Bobcats are now 8-3 on the season and will travel to Brandon Valley for a game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Brookings 2, Hill City 0

The Bobcats opened play in the silver pool by sweeping the Bears on Friday morning. Brookings earned a narrow 25-23 victory in the first set and won the second set 25-20 for its first win of the tournament.

The Bobcats had 22 total kills including a team-high nine by Macy Even. Lydia Walker had seven kills while Kymber Buys and Lily Thompson had two kills each. Tess Burns had one kill.

Brookings also had six aces including two each from Morgan Norgaard and Buys. Evan and Burns also had an ace.

Kamryn Streich had eight assists for the Bobcats while Kymber Buys had six assists. Lydia Walker and Burns each had one assist.

Norgaard led the way defensively with 11 digs. Buys and Burns had five digs each. Even had 0.5 blocks while Burns had 1.5 blocks.

Brookings 2, Kadoka Area 1

The Bobcats rallied after dropping the first set 28-26, winning the second set 25-11 and the third set 25-18 to improve to 2-0 at the tournament.

Even led the Bobcats with 12 kills and Buys finished with 10 kills. Walker had eight kills while Ferrell had five kills. Burns ahd three kills and Thompson had two kills.

Brookings finished with 10 aces as Buys, Logan Smidt, Even and Norgaard had two aces each. Streich and Burns each had one ace.

Buys had 15 assists while Streich had 12 assists.

Norgaard let the Bobcats with 16 digs. Even had 14 digs. Walker had eight digs. Buys and Smidt had seven digs each. Burns had five digs to go with four blocks.

Walker had three blocks. Ferrell, Thompson and Even each had a block.

Brookings 2, Lead-Deadwood 0

The Bobcats dominated their final match in pool play, defeating Lead-Deadwood 25-9 in the first set and 25-14 in the second set.

Even led Brookings with seven kills while Ferrell had six kills. Burns had four kills. Thompson and Walker each had two kills. Norgaard, Buys and Taylee Connot each had one kill.

Brookings had eight aces in the win including three each from Buys and Smidt. Even and Burns each had one ace.

Buys had 14 assists while Streich had eight assists.

Even and Norgaard led Brookings with 10 digs each. Buys had five digs, Smidt had four digs, Walker and Burns had two digs each and Ferrell had one dig.

Burns finished with three blocks. Buys had two blocks and Ferrell had one block.

Brookings 2, Kadoka Area 0

After sweeping pool play, the Bobcats won their first game in the Gold Bracket, defeating Kadoka Area in straight sets 25-9, 25-23 on Saturday morning.

Even led the Bobcats with six kills. Walker had five kills. Ferrell, Buys and Burns had four kills each. Thompson and Norgaard had one kill each.

Brookings had five aces. Norgaard had three aces while Smidt and Streich each had one ace.

Buys led Brookings with 13 assists. Streich had eight assists.

Even and Streich tied for the team lead with eight assists each. Buys, Smidt and Norgaard had seven digs each. Walker had four digs. Ferrell had three digs and Burns had one dig.

Burns had five blocks. Walker and Ferrell had two blocks each. Even had one block.

Dakota Valley 2, Brookings 0

The Bobcats’ run in the tournament ended later on Saturday when they were defeated by eventual Gold Bracket champion Dakota Valley 25-23, 25-12.

Even and Buys had five kills each. Walker and Ferrell had two kills each.

Buys had eight assists and Streich had five assists.

Norgaard had eight digs. Buys had five digs. Streich and Even had four digs each. Burns had two digs. Thompson and Smidt each had one dig. Thompson and Ferrell had two blocks each. Buys and Burns each had a block.
