Bombers Red reach semifinals of 13U Cubby’s Classic

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bombers Red 13U baseball team reached the semifinals of the Cubby’s Bar & Grill Classic last weekend, compiling a record of 3-1 over their four games.

The Bombers are 9-7 on the year and will host Sioux Falls Post 15 in a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field at 12 p.m. Tuesday.

Friday

Brookings 8, Tea 4

The Bombers started the weekend strong, picking up an 8-4 win over the Titans on Friday morning.

Brookings scored first when Mason Burghardt drove in a run with a single in the top of the first inning but the Titans responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Bombers cut into the lead in the top of the third inning when Cooper Drawdy walked and stole second and third base before scoring on an error.

The Bombers’ rally continued when Ty Delbridge hit a one-out single and Dario McSweeney reached on an error with two outs before both runners scored on another error to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Two batters later, Burghardt delivered again, with an RBI single that gave the Bombers the lead.

Brookings added to its advantage in the top of the sixth inning when Brady Nutter and McSweeney stole home. The Bombers scored its final run on a double play later in the inning.

Burghardt went 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and two RBI. Hayden Jones went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Ty Johnson went 1-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases.

Delbridge went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base. McSweeney walked twice and stole five bases. Burzlaff walked once and stole three bases.

Drawdy walked three times, scored a run and stole three bases. Nutter walked once and stole two bases. Carter Nielsen walked once and stole a base.

Brookings 8, Yankton 1

The Bombers’ lineup continued to roll, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and five runs in the bottom of the third inning to defeat Yankton.

Brookings’ opening rally started when Burzlaff singled with one out in the first inning. Burzlaff advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball before Drawdy drew a walk and Burzlaff scored the first run of the game on a balk.

Burghardt walked after Drawdy advanced to third and Johnson followed up with a two-out double to give Brookings a 3-0 lead.

Yankton cut into the lead with a run in the top of the second inning but it was the only blemish on the mound for Jones and Jasper Pitts. Jones allowed one earned run on two hits and three walks with nine strikeouts over four innings and Pitts followed up allowing two hits with four strikeouts over two shutout innings.

The efforts made sure Brookings had all the offense they needed as Jones added to the lead with a single, Johnson, Delbridge and McSweeney drove in runs after being hit with a pitch and Grayson Wagner drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Burzlaff went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Lucas Kahler went 1-for-1. Jones went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Johnson went 1-for-1 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Drawdy walked twice and scored twice. Burghardt walked twice and scored twice. Jennings Huntimer walked and stole two bases while Nutter walked once and stole a base.

Saturday

Brookings 10, Sioux Falls Chargers Blue 3

The Bombers used a six-run third inning to defeat the Chargers on Saturday morning.

Brookings started the game strong with a three-run first inning, which began when McSweeney scored on a wild pitch. Burghardt followed up with an RBI single and later scored on a balk to give the Bombers a 3-0 lead.

The Chargers got on the board with a single in the top of the second inning but Brookings broke the game open in the bottom of the third.

Nutter led off the third with a walk before McSweeney singled and Burzlaff walked to load the bases. After Drawdy struck out, Burghardt drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, Jones drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Johnson reached on an error to give the Bombers a 6-1 lead.

The Bombers scored another run on an error in the next at-bat before Johnson and Delbridge each scored on a wild pitch.

McSweeney scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to cap the scoring for the Bombers.

McSweeney went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Burzlaff walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Drawdy walked once and scored a run. Burghardt went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Johnson, Nutter and Delbridge each walked and scored a run.

Delbridge earned the win, allowing three earned runs on three hits and seven walks with five strikeouts over four innings. Wagner allowed three hits and struck out four over two scoreless innings.

Sunday

Mitchell 3, Brookings 2

The Bombers held an early lead but Mitchell rallied for three unanswered runs to advance to the championship game on Sunday.

Brookings used a two-out rally to score its first run in the bottom of the third inning when McSweeney singled, advanced to second on a balk and sored on Burzlaff’s RBI single. The Bombers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but could only get one run as Delbridge drew a one-out walk before Nielsen grounded out and Huntimer struck out.

The missed opportunity cost the Bombers when Mitchell scored twice in the fifth inning and took the lead in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

McSweeney went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Burghardt went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jones, Johnson and Wagner each went 1-for-3. Burzlaff walked twice and stole a base. Delbridge walked twice and drove in a run.
