Brookings Cubs fall to Elkton Snappers

ELKTON — The Elkton Snappers built an early lead against the Brookings Cubs and didn’t look back on Wednesday night as they came away with a 15-8 victory.

Errors were a problem for the Cubs on Wednesday night as they had eight. The Snappers improved to 3-3 on the season.

Elkton jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Charles Harming hit a single to begin the inning and Nate Knight followed with a walk. Eliezer Burgos then reached on an error and Harming scored. Kellen Sattler was walked to load the bases and Eliot Erickson scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-0. Eliezer Burgos scored on a balk and Sattler scored on an error. Another run scored on an error and Dylan Gillespie hit an RBI single to give the Snappers a six-run lead going into the third.

Brookings scored its first two runs in the next half inning. Henry Hammrich drew a one-out walk and Jamison Honkomp followed with a single. Hammrich scored on a Rhett Zelinsky fielder’s choice and Noah Buss followed with an RBI double to make it 6-2.

The Snappers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third. Jordan Beck was then hit by a pitch and Dylan Kuehl followed with an RBI single. Another bases loaded walk and a two-run single from A Stewart made it 12-2. Knight then hit an RBI single and two runs came home on another error to make it 15-2 heading into the fourth.

Jackson Krogman was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and then scored on a double play. Brookings then scored three more runs in the fifth. Zelinsky hit an RBI double and Buss followed with a two-run home run to make it 15-6.

The Cubs cut the lead to 15-8 in the sixth. Cole Mahlum and Honkomp each walked. Mahlum scored on a steal of home and Honkomp scored on a single from Zelinsky to make it a seven-run game.

Hammrich hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Buss hit an RBI single in the eighth to cut the lead to 15-10 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Cubs got one runner on in the ninth as Krogman was hit by a pitch to begin the inning but the next three batters went down one-two-three and Brookings’ comeback fell short.

Brookings had 11 hits as a team. Buss was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Zelinsky was 3-for5 with three RBIs. Honkomp and Krogman were each 1-for-3 and Mahlum and Justin Cofell were each 1-for-4. Jake Ammann was 1-for-5. Hammrich had an RBI without a hit.

The Snappers had eight hits. Gillespie was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Stewart was 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Knight was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Keuhl was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sattler was 2-for-3 and Harming was 1-for-4.

Mason Bebensee got the start for the Cubs and pitched two innings. He gave up six runs, three earned, on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Luke Adelman pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up eight runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks. Krogman pitched the final five and a third and gave up one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Burgos pitched the first five innings for the Snappers and picked up the win. He gave up six earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Dave Bierman pitched two innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Beck pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

Brookings will be back on the diamond tonight as the Cubs host the Milroy (Minnesota) Irish. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Snappers host Ramona on Sunday at 2 p.m.
