Brookings Bullets go 0-4 at 16U Dakota Classic

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Bullets went 0-4 over the weekend at the 16U Dakota Classic in Sioux Falls.

The Bullets played two games on Friday, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Brookings is now 1-13-1 on the season and hosts a doubleheader against Yankton on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Friday

Dakota Valley 14, Brookings 1 (4 inn.)

Six runs in the first inning and five in the fourth inning allowed Dakota Valley to win via the 10-run rule.

Dakota Valley’s first run of the game came on an RBI single. A two-run double and a run on an error made it 4-0. An RBI single and another run on an error made it 6-0 heading into the second inning.

DV added two runs in the second. The first came on a fielder’s choice and the next on an RBI single. Another RBI single in the third put them up 9-0.

Dakota Valley then pushed the lead to 14-0 in the fourth. An RBI double and an RBI single extended the lead to 11. A run on a passed ball and another RBI single made it 13-0. The final run of the inning was on an error by the catcher.

Brookings scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Walks from Connor Jones and Rylan Hesser and a single from Sutton Schneider loaded the bases up with one out. Jones then scored on a Wes Van Ede ground out. Unfortunately the Bullets were unable to score any more runs and the game ended.

Schneider’s hit was the only one of the game for the Bullets. Parker Nielsen got the start for the Bullets and pitched the first three and two thirds innings. He gave up 14 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits with one walk. Brennan Cordes pitched the final third of an inning.

Elkhorn North 11, Brookings 1 (5 inn.)

The Bullets offense was unable to get going again in their second game on Friday as they had no hits and lost via the 10-run rule again.

Elkhorn took the lead in the top of the first with an RBI single. They then went up 2-0 with a fielder’s choice in the top of the third.

Brookings cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Carter Reicks walked with one out and the Bullets then loaded the bases after another walk and an error. Reicks then crossed home plate with an error by the catcher but a double play ended the inning.

Elkhorn then scored nine runs in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles and a two-run single made it 6-1. A sacrifice fly and a two-run triple pushed the lead to 9-1. They then scored a run on defensive interference and another run on a passed ball to make it 11-1.

Brookings went down one-two-three in both the fourth and the fifth and the game ended.

Schneider pitched the first three and two thirds innings for the Bullets. He gave up 10 runs, four earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Parker Witte pitched the final inning and a third and gave up one earned run on one hit with two walks.

Saturday

Southwest Minnesota Blaze 17, Brookings 2 (5 inn.)

Southwest Minnesota scored in all five innings. The Blaze scored five runs in the first. The first three runs came on a wild pitch, an error and a passed ball. Two runs then scored on two more passed balls and the Blaze led 5-0 heading into the second.

They added three runs in the top of the second. The first came on an error and an RBI double made it 7-0. A run on a fielder’s choice pushed the lead to 8-0.

Brookings pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning. Vince Doblar was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and then advanced to second on a single from Hesser. He was then hit home on a double from Charlie Richter to make it 8-1 heading into the third.

The Blaze scored two runs in the third. Both were RBI singles. Witte led off the bottom of the third with a single and Jones hit into a fielder’s choice. He advanced to second on a ground out from Tate Sonnenberg and then made it to third on an error. Van Ede then sent Jones home on a single to make it 10-2 heading into the fourth.

Southwest Minnesota scored a run on a single in the fourth and then scored six more runs in the fifth. The first run in the fifth came on a ground out and an RBI double made it 13-2. A three-run triple and a run on a wild pitch extended the lead 17-2. Brookings then went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning and the game ended.

Brookings had four hits in the game. Van Ede was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Richter was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Hesser was 1-for-1 and Witte was 1-for-3.

Sunday

Sioux Falls 12, Brookings 10

The Bullets led 9-8 heading into the bottom of the fourth but was then outscored 4-1 in the final inning.

Brookings took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Parker Nielsen followed that with a single. Both runners stole a base then were hit home on a double from Sonnenberg. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and a two-run single from Van Ede made it 4-0. Schneider then scored on a ground out from Richter to give the Bullets a five-run lead.

Sioux Falls answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came on a single. A two-run single and a run on a wild pitch made it 5-4 heading into the second.

Sioux Falls then scored three runs in the second to take the lead. All three runs came on singles. They scored another run on a wild pitch in the third to make it 8-5.

The Bullets answered with four runs in the top of the fourth. Nielsen and Jones both walked with one out and then came home on a triple from Sonnenberg to make it 8-7. Sonnenberg scored on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Richter gave the Bullets the lead.

Sioux Falls scored four runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. A run on an error tied the game and a two-run single gave them the lead. The final run of the inning came on a ground out.

Reicks reached on an error to begin the fifth. He then scored on a single from Jones but the Bullets were unable to score any more runs and dropped their fourth game of the weekend.

Brookings had eight hits. Sonnenberg was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Van Ede was 1-for-1 with three RBIs. Richter was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Hesser was 1-for-1 and Nielsen was 1-for-3.

Richter pitched a complete game for the Bullets. He gave up 12 runs, eight earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
