BROOKINGS — After falling to the Elkton Snappers on Wednesday night, the Brookings Cubs bounced back with a 10-run victory over the Milroy (Minnesota) Yankees on Thursday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first three innings and ended up winning 16-6 in eight innings.

Brookings scored five runs in the first inning. Jamison Honkomp led off the inning with a single and Rhett Zelinsky followed with a walk. Noel Burgos then hit a sacrifice fly to score Honkomp and Zelinsky scored on a wild pitch. Tucker Wookey and Jackson Krogman then hit back-to-back RBI singles and Krogman scored on an error to make it 5-0 heading into the second.

The first two batters of the top of the second got on base for the Irish. One of them scored on an error and the other scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2. An RBI single then cut the Cubs lead to 5-3.

The Cubs answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Zelinsky was hit by a pitch and both Henry Hammrich and Jake Ammann walked to load the bases up with one out. Wookey and Krogman were then both walked and that made it 7-3 heading into the third.

Brookings added three more runs in the third. Justin Cofell led off the inning with a single and then scored on a wild pitch. Honkomp reached on an error and Zelinsky then hit one over the center field fence to make it 10-3 heading into the fourth.

Milroy scored a run on a ground out in the top of the fifth to make it 10-4. Amman then hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-4 through five innings.

Brookings extended the lead to 15-4 in the sixth. Three straight walks from Daniel Messerli, Cofell and Honkomp loaded the bases up with one out. Messerli scored on a wild pitch and Noel Burgos hit Cofell and Honkomp home with a single to give the Cubs an 11-run advantage heading into the seventh.

The Cubs failed to end the game in the seventh as the Yankees scored two runs in the top of the inning. The first run came from an RBI double and the next one was on an error to make it 15-6.

However, Brookings ended the game in the eighth. Zelinsky hit a one-out double and scored on a Hammrich single, which ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

The Cubs had nine hits as a team. Zelinsky was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Amman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Wookey and Burgos were each 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Hammrich was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Krogman was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Cofell was 1-for-3 and Honkomp was 1-for-4.
