Cubs comeback comes up short against Tea in Brookings

After falling behind 9-2 the Brookings Cubs saw their comeback against the Tea Steam fall short on Monday night as the Steam came away with a 9-5 victory.

Cubs comeback comes up short against Tea in Brookings

BROOKINGS — After falling behind 9-2, the Brookings Cubs saw their comeback against the Tea Steam fall short on Monday night as the Steam came away with a 9-5 victory.

It was the first time that the Steam had visited Bob Shelden Field. Brookings is now 11-3 on the season and hosts Baltic on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Tea jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings. Danny Lesher walked to open the game and made his way to third on two passed balls. He then came home on a sacrifice fly from Seth Altwine to make it 1-0.

The Steam then scored four runs in the third. Cameron Jensen reached on an error to begin the inning and Lesher followed with another walk. Altwine then walked to load the bases and a run came home on a wild pitch. Another walk loaded the bases again and two runs then came home on an error to make it 4-0. Another run came across on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 heading into the fourth.

Tea pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth. Jensen hit a single to lead off the inning and Lesher reached on fielder’s choice. Altwine then hit another sacrifice fly and the Steam led by six heading into the bottom of the inning.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Noel Burgos led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on an error. Burgos was then out trying to advance to third but Parker Winghart made it second on the play as he reached on the earlier error. Winghart then scored on an error to make it 6-1 heading into the seventh.

Tea added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Ben Loos hit a one-out double and Logan Boom walked to put two runners on. One run scored on a passed ball and Boom scored on a single from Nathan Babb. The final run of the inning came on an error.

Chase McDaniel walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and Colin Gibson followed with a double to put runners on second and third. McDaniel scored on a ground out from Burgos, but the Cubs were unable to score any more runs in the inning and it was 9-2 heading into the eighth.

Brookings added two more runs in the eighth. Henry Hammrich started a two-out rally as he reached on a dropped third strike. Jamison Honkomp followed with a walk and Hammrich came home on an error. McDaniel then hit Honkomp home with a single and the Cubs trailed 9-4 heading into the final inning.

Parker Winghart led off the ninth with a single. Trevor Wookey then hit into a fielder’s choice but was able to score on a double from Hammrich. Honkomp then singled and Rhett Zelinsky walked to load the bases up and bring up the tying run to the plate with two outs. McDaniel was that tying run and he struck out swinging to end the game.

Brookings had eight hits in the game. Burgos was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hammrich was 1-for-1 with an RBI. McDaniel was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Winghart was 2-for-5. Honkomp and Wookey were each 1-for-5 and Gibson was 1-for-3.

Hammrich started the game on the mound for the Cubs. He pitched the first three innings and gave up five unearned runs on no hits and had five strikeouts and five walks. Jake Bradner pitched the next four innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Jackson Krogman pitched the final two and gave up no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
